The short answer
You can buy insurance through an online platform, an agency or broker, or a carrier selling directly. These categories overlap: an online platform may also be a broker. Compare the insurer, policy terms, support and total cost rather than assume a business model guarantees speed or better coverage. This page explains buying models; it is not a ranking of named providers.
Use this guide to prepare questions, not to establish coverage. Any unsourced costs, limits or timing ranges are illustrative planning examples, not quotes, verified market averages or carrier commitments.
How startup insurance providers compare
| Provider type | How it works | Speed | Limits and terms | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online platform or agency | Digital application; insurer access varies | Depends on underwriting | Check available forms and limits | Your risk fits its process and offered terms |
| Insurtech carrier or MGA | Insurer or underwriting intermediary with a technology-led process | Depends on underwriting | Check whose policy is issued | Your risk fits the underwriting appetite |
| Digital or specialist broker | May approach several insurers and advise on options | Depends on the placement | Check market access and service scope | You need help with specific terms or several policies |
| Traditional broker | Relationship-led agency or brokerage | Depends on the placement | Expertise and insurer access vary | Its expertise matches your operations |
| Carrier direct | Buy from the insurer itself | Varies | One carrier’s terms | You know exactly what you need |

A few more answers
Frequently asked questions
What is an insurtech?
A technology-led insurance company. Some are carriers or MGAs that underwrite their own policies; others are agencies that sell other insurers' policies online.
Is a policy from an online platform worse than one from a broker?
Not necessarily. Some platforms and brokers place with the same carriers. The difference is choice, advice and whether the terms match your contracts.
What's the difference between an MGA and an insurance carrier?
A carrier holds the risk and pays claims. An MGA underwrites and issues policies on a carrier's behalf, under authority the carrier grants.
What do admitted and non-admitted carriers mean?
Admitted carriers are licensed in your state with filed forms and rates. Non-admitted, or surplus lines, carriers can write risks admitted carriers won't, with more flexible terms.
How do I compare quotes from different providers?
Line them up on the same limits, retentions, sublimits and exclusions, then compare price. StartupInsurance.ai can lay out quotes side by side, including ones from other providers.
General information, not a coverage determination or legal advice. Unless a specific source is identified, prices and timing ranges are illustrative planning examples—not measured market averages, quotes or guarantees. Policy wording, carrier, state and your company’s operations determine what applies.
