Series A startup insurance: what changes and what it costs

What changes as funding, hiring, and customer requirements grow.

The short answer

At Series A, review D&O, employment practices, workers’ comp locations and any higher limits your customers require. The eight-line example in our cost guide totals $22,250–$48,700 annually before workers’ comp, taxes and fees. That is an illustrative budget, not a quote or measured average. Start the underwriting process early; a funding date does not guarantee that coverage can be approved by then.

Use this guide to prepare questions, not to establish coverage. Any unsourced costs, limits or timing ranges are illustrative planning examples, not quotes, verified market averages or carrier commitments.

How a startup insurance program changes from seed to Series A

Coverage Typical at seed Typical at Series A
D&O $1M $2M to $3M
Employment practices Often none $1M
Tech E&O and cyber $1M $3M to $5M
Workers’ comp One state, or founders only Every state with employees
Umbrella None $2M
Fiduciary and crime None $1M fiduciary; crime $250K to $1M

The three Series A changes that need the most lead time

What Series A startup insurance costs

The eight-line Series A budgeting example totals $22,250 to $48,700 annually before workers’ comp, taxes and fees. It is illustrative, not a quote or measured placement average. Workers’ comp is calculated separately from payroll, duties, locations and the applicable rating rules. See the assumptions and line-by-line figures in startup insurance cost by funding stage.

Who can rebuild your program at Series A

Single-carrier packages that fit at seed often run out of limit or appetite at Series A. StartupInsurance.ai markets each line separately where that helps and keeps renewals aligned. When you outgrow this stage, see Series B insurance and excess layers.

A few more answers

Frequently asked questions

When should a startup buy employment practices insurance?

Discuss it as you begin hiring, rather than use a universal headcount threshold. Disclose known complaints and planned employment events. A policy bought before an announcement does not necessarily cover a problem that was already known or planned.

Should a Series A startup buy a D&O, EPL and fiduciary package?

Often. A management liability package is simpler and can be cheaper. Check whether the coverages share one limit; separate limits keep an employment claim from eating your D&O.

How much more does insurance cost after Series A?

There is no fixed multiple. Our illustrative seed example totals $7,500–$16,200 for three core lines; the Series A example totals $22,250–$48,700 for eight lines, excluding workers’ comp, taxes and fees. The different policy mix makes them budgeting examples, not a measured price increase.

Do I need an umbrella policy at Series A?

Usually when a customer or landlord requires more than $1M of general liability. An umbrella adds limits over GL, auto and employer's liability, but not over Tech E&O or cyber.

Does a Series A startup need crime insurance?

Usually, once a round lands and wires become routine. Social engineering scams target finance teams at exactly this point. Make sure the policy includes social engineering coverage, not just employee theft.

General information, not a coverage determination or legal advice. Unless a specific source is identified, prices and timing ranges are illustrative planning examples—not measured market averages, quotes or guarantees. Policy wording, carrier, state and your company’s operations determine what applies.
